WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Mid-State Technical College is ramping up efforts to prepare students for careers in advanced emergency medical services with the return of its Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) program to the mix of available programs.
“In the past Mid-State has offered the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician program on an as-needed basis, but with the increasing demand for skilled AEMTs in our district, it was time to officially bring it back,” said Rick Anderson, Mid-State’s associate dean of Protective & Human Services. “The greater visibility of this opportunity we will help more people discover opportunities in advanced emergency medicine, which will also help us better meet the needs of employers in our communities.”
Designed for those who possess a valid Wisconsin EMT license, the reinvigorated four-credit technical diploma combines asynchronous lectures, practical skill labs, laboratory simulations and pre-hospital clinical experiences to provide students with an understanding of the basic and advanced use of equipment found on an ambulance and ability to care for critical and emergent patients.
Students who successfully complete the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician technical diploma are qualified to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians’ certification exam required to apply for state licensure. Graduates of the program may also advance into either the EMT-Paramedic program or Paramedic Technician program at Mid-State.
“Our ongoing effort to seek input from our communities had identified recruitment and training challenges in the fire service within our district,” said Mid-State President Dr. Shelly Mondeik. “Reviving this much-needed program is just one of the ways we are innovating to meet those needs, now and into the future.”
